India, Russia And China To Join Hands

Russia is planning to work with China and India, two historically antagonistic countries, to build a nuclear power station on the moon. Alexey Likhachev, the head of Rosatom, the Russian state nuclear energy organization, made the announcement of this development, which was covered by EurAsian Times and cited by Tass, the state news agency owned by Russia. The project fits with India’s intentions to build a lunar outpost and conduct a manned lunar trip by 2040.

Tass claims that the goal of Rosatom’s lunar power project is to construct a modest nuclear power station with a maximum energy output of half a megawatt. It is anticipated that this production will aid with lunar base operations. Likhachev reaffirmed China’s and India’s eagerness to collaborate on this ground-breaking moon energy solution.

Russia’s space agency, Roscosmos, declared in May that construction on the nuclear power plant was already under way, with the intention of deploying it to the Moon. The plant is meant to power a lunar outpost, a project that China and Russia are working on together, and India’s involvement may be related to its goals for a lunar base.

Why Are Nations Hurrying to Construct Nuclear Power Facilities on the Moon?

NASA is evaluating whether nuclear reactors could sustain long-term lunar settlements, and both Russia and the US are investigating the possibility of using nuclear power for future lunar outposts. This technology is considered essential for maintaining the infrastructure required for lunar operations.

Establishing a lunar colony requires a steady and uninterrupted energy supply. It is believed that nuclear power is the most practical option. “Establishing a colony on the Moon requires building essential infrastructure to support daily activities such as heating, drilling, refrigeration, and powering rovers,” scientists warn.

For these kinds of operations, energy reliability is essential, and nuclear power offers the steady, dependable supply required for such demanding jobs.

It is anticipated that the construction of the lunar nuclear power plant will be quite intricate. Russia has proposed that a large portion of the building might be done without direct human intervention. Plans to establish the International Lunar Research Station (ILRS), a cooperative lunar station with potential, were revealed by China and Russia in 2021.
