The 2024 Venice Film Festival will host the world premiere of Joe Alwyn’s most recent film. The 33-year-old British actor is in Venice, Italy, to promote The Brutalist, a three-hour post-war epic in which he co-stars with Felicity Jones and Adrien Brody. Brady Corbet (Vox Lux), the film’s director, revolves on László Tót (Brody), a Jewish architect from Hungary who survives the Holocaust and travels to America in order to start again. It debuted globally at the event on Saturday, August 31, and is among the 21 movies vying for the esteemed Golden Lion Award at the festival.

Alwyn’s first movie since Kinds of Kindness this year, in which he reteamed with Emma Stone and director Yorgos Lanthimos after the 2018 Oscar-winning film The Favorite, is The Brutalist. Alwyn made his public debut in Venice more than two months after he finally opened up to The Sunday Times Style about his split from Taylor Swift. (PEOPLE confirmed that the couple broke up in April 2023 after dating for six years.)

“What is unusual and abnormal in this situation is that, one week later, it’s suddenly in the public domain and the outside world is able to weigh in,” Alwyn said to the publication in reflection on his breakup with Swift, 34. He went on, “So you have something very real that is suddenly thrown into a very unreal space: tabloids, social media, press, where it is then analyzed, conjectured upon, and completely out of shape.” “The truth is that, up until that last point, there will always be a discrepancy between what is stated and what is understood. I’m at peace with that now.

It was “mutually” decided by the actor and pop artist to “keep the more private details of our relationship private,” he said. “It was never something to commodify and I see no reason to change that now.” Regarding his love life, Alwyn remained mum about if he is dating anyone new: “I’m sure you can appreciate, given the level of noise and scrutiny about my past relationship, why I wouldn’t want to just open the door to things like that right now.”

Alwyn is “dating and happy,” a source told PEOPLE back in April. “He’s a great guy and not into drama in any way,” the source continued. The insider went on to say that the actor “moved on” from Swift and “certainly doesn’t talk poorly about her.” It just didn’t work out, even though he was in love with her.

Regarding his profession, the insider said, “Joe adores acting but finds the attention that goes along with it intolerable.” He feels awkward being in the spotlight. Kinds of Kindness releases digitally on August 27 and on Blu-ray and DVD on October 8. There is no release date yet for The Brutalist.
