The historic town of Bayeux, France, is reliving a spirit of freedom and hope as it hosts the IOC Refugee Olympic Team in preparation for the Paris 2024 Games. Eighty years after serving as the capital of liberated France at the end of World War II, Bayeux once again stands as a symbol of resilience and unity.

A Bonding Experience

The team, comprised of 37 athletes, coaches, and staff from around the globe, has gathered in Normandy town for a crucial bonding experience before moving into the Olympic Village. The atmosphere is electric with anticipation and camaraderie.

“It’s amazing to finally meet everyone,” shared boxer Cindy Ngamba, one of the team members. “We’re from different countries, with different languages and personalities, but I know we’ll become like a big family by the end of our stay.”

For badminton player Dorsa Yavarivafa, the journey to Bayeux was a long one, but the warm welcome she received made it all worthwhile. “They greeted us so nicely,” she said, her excitement palpable. “I’m so excited and nervous for the Games, but being here with the team makes it feel perfect.”

As they train and support each other in this historic setting, they embody the spirit of hope and determination that has defined Bayeux for generations.

The IOC Refugee Olympic Team’s stay in Bayeux will be a memorable chapter in their athletic journeys, fostering a sense of unity and camaraderie that will undoubtedly carry them through the challenges of the Olympic Games. As they depart for Paris on July 18th, they will carry with them not only the skills and determination to compete but also the inspiration of a town that has risen from the ashes to become a beacon of hope once again.
