Gareth Southgate’s tenure as England manager has come to an end. The Football Association (FA) confirmed on Tuesday that Southgate has decided to leave his post after nearly eight years at the helm.
Southgate’s departure comes after England’s heartbreaking loss to Spain in the Euro 2024 final. The Three Lions reached consecutive European Championship finals under Southgate’s leadership, but were unable to secure the coveted trophy on either occasion.
Southgate Reflects on Time with England
Following the Euro 2024 loss, Southgate had hinted at potential discussions with the FA regarding his future. He acknowledged the criticism surrounding his tactics and the desire for a more attacking style of play. However, he emphasised the need for internal discussions before reaching a decision.
“I don’t think now is a good time to make a decision like that. I need to talk to the right people. It’s not for now,” Southgate told ITV after the final.
Southgate’s focus remained on the team’s positive strides, highlighting the development of young players who gained valuable experience in major tournaments.
“Without a doubt, England have got some fabulous young players, and even the young ones now have a lot of experience of tournaments. Many of this squad are going to be in two, four, six, eight years’ time. We have now been consistently back in the matches that matter, but it’s the last step that we haven’t been able to do,” he added.
Time for a New Chapter
In a heartfelt message to fans, Southgate announced his decision to step down, expressing his gratitude for the opportunity to manage the national team.
“As a proud Englishman, it has been the honour of my life to play for England and to manage England. It has meant everything to me, and I have given it my all. But it’s time for change, and for a new chapter. Sunday’s final in Berlin against Spain was my final game as England manager,” Southgate wrote.
Southgate praised his coaching staff and the dedication of the players he managed during his tenure.
“I joined the FA in 2011, determined to improve English football. In that time, including eight years as England men’s manager, I have been supported by some brilliant people who have my heartfelt thanks. I could not have had anyone better alongside me than Steve Holland. He is one of the most talented coaches of his generation, and has been immense. I have had the privilege of leading a large group of players in 102 games. Every one of them has been proud to wear the three lions on their shirts, and they have been a credit to their country in so many ways,” he further added.
The FA now faces the task of finding a suitable replacement for Southgate. With a core group of talented young players, the new manager will have the opportunity to build upon the foundation laid by Southgate and finally deliver a major trophy for England.
